Jean-Charles de Ravenel
A citizen of the world with deeply French roots, Jean-Charles de Ravenel has carved a singular path in the realm of the arts. Dividing his time between the cosmopolitan sophistication of Paris and the sunlit exoticism of Nassau, in the Bahamas, his artistic journey is a continuous dialogue between tradition and experimentation.
For nearly two decades, he distinguished himself as the director of a Parisian gallery dedicated to the decorative arts—a field that not only ignited his passion but also sharpened his keen eye for composition and materiality. However, it was his move to Nassau that marked a decisive turning point in his artistic practice. Immersed in the islands’ vibrant chromatic and sensory richness, he fully embraced the world of collage, a medium that allowed him to explore an extensive array of themes with insatiable curiosity: history, botany, ethnology,
mineralogy, landscape, and fine arts. His imagination, anchored in 18th- and 19th-century engravings and prints, unfolded into compositions of remarkable aesthetic and conceptual depth.
His exhibition debut took place in 2013 in New York at the prestigious *Chinese Porcelain Company*, where his compositions captivated audiences with their inventiveness and formal precision. In the years that followed, he cemented his presence on the international art scene, presenting his work in Los Angeles at *Galerie Hollyhock* (2014) and in Palm Beach at the gallery of renowned interior designer Amanda Lindroth (2016).
The year 2022 marked a new chapter in his artistic journey. Settling in Estoril, Jean-Charles de Ravenel found renewed inspiration in the early 20th-century avant-garde movements, particularly Suprematism and Cubism. This rediscovery of abstraction materialized in a series of collages that break away from nostalgia to embrace a language of distilled forms and bold visual experimentation.
These new works reaffirm his ability to reinvent himself and push the boundaries of artistic expression, all while maintaining an unwavering passion for creation. Between historical erudition and contemporary impulse, Jean-Charles de Ravenel constructs a body of work that stands as a testament to his relentless pursuit of beauty, mystery, and the essential.
